*New data announced on genetic events in identical twins with leukaemia

Leukaemia & Lymphoma Research made headlines in January last year when a study on identical twins confirmed for the first time the existence of stem cells in childhood leukaemia. Now, nearly a year on, new data has emerged shedding more light on how leukaemia, the most common form of cancer in children, develops from birth.

There have been reports in newspapers and broadcasts of the decision of a teenage girl to refuse a heart transplant, to treat heart disease described as a consequence of treatment for acute myeloid leukaemia (AML). In a report in Nature*, US scientists describe how they have applied new technology to finding mutations in leukaemia cells. They sequenced the complete genome of leukaemia cells and healthy cells from the same woman.
