*Study reveals genetic link to myeloproliferative disorders

UK researchers have shown that genetic susceptibility to a series of blood cancers, known as myeloproliferative disorders (MPDs), is linked to a particular area of the patient’s DNA which is prone to developing mutations. The study is published in the journal Nature Genetics on 15 March.

A laboratory study has found that a component of green tea binds to the drug Bortezomib™ and cancels out the ability of the drug to kill myeloma cells. Researchers are advising patients who are taking Bortezomib, alone or in combination with other drugs, not to consume any green tea products.

Scientists have provided a critical insight into genetic factors related to how leukaemia stem cells are generated and how they multiply. The study, funded by charity Leukaemia & Lymphoma Research, is likely to have a profound impact on the future design of new, targeted drugs against leukaemia stem cells.

*World first as myeloma patient in new clinical trial is given targeted radiotherapy treatment

A patient from the Isle of Wight with the blood cancer multiple myeloma has become the first person in the world to receive a new form of radiotherapy which targets cancer cells without damaging healthy organs. In a clinical trial funded by Leukaemia & Lymphoma Research, Pauline Pain has received a much higher dose of radioactivity delivered accurately to the bone marrow than would otherwise have been possible.
