The team of pirates, ‘Old Cloggers & Young Whippersnappers’, won the Adult Team Fundraising Award for this year’s London Bikeathon. Led by Terry Crow from Godshill, Isle of Wight, the team raised an amazing £10,600 for Leukaemia Research, the UK’s leading blood cancer charity!
The London Bikeathon Awards ceremony was hosted by Alastair Campbell, Leukaemia Research’s Chairman of Fundraising, and ex-rugby player Kenny Logan, of Strictly Come Dancing fame. The event was an opportunity to say thank you to all the top fundraisers and acknowledge everyone who has helped made this year’s London Bikeathon such a huge success.
It is ten years since Terry was first diagnosed with leukaemia and this was his tenth London Bikeathon, which is why he wanted to make it special. His team has raised over £70,000 for Leukaemia Research to date.
He said: "The London Bikeathon is a great day out and certainly not to be missed. It leaves you feeling that you have achieved something wonderful and have benefited so many people. Since doing my first Bikeathon ten years ago the event has grown and is now part of my yearly routine.
"Each year I take a group of people to the Bikeathon and without fail they always comment on how they enjoy the day and want to do it the following year, and better still, want to bring their friends. I am looking forward to next July for my 11th Bikeathon."
Over 6,300 people took part in the 12th London Bikeathon and over half a million pounds have been raised to date. This was the capital’s biggest mass participation charity bike ride, and passed by some of London’s most famous sights, including Tate Britain, Royal Festival Hall, London Eye, The Old Bailey, Canary Wharf and St Paul’s Cathedral.
Preparations are already well under way for the 2009 event, which is set to take place on Sunday 12 July. Entries will open in January at www.londonbikeathon.co.uk
